Meow Miss

The beautiful and eminently cool Cat Power doesn’t need an introduction.

Last night I saw her live for the first time at the very intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg. From the moment she started singing, her ethereal voice was totally and utterly mesmerizing.

Replacing the old and unsure Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power), was a confident and charismatic performer who sang with conviction, dancing kookily around the stage in her brogues, jeans and plaid shirt- a far cry from what I've heard of her earlier days, where her shows often disintegrated into tears with the occasional hiding-under-a-piano moment.

Accompanied by a minimalist guitar and keyboard, and at times a tambourine, her voice was a perfect balance of smoky grit and crystal clarity - made all the more lovely by the mood-setting dim lighting.

My favourite moments? The cup of herbal tea she sipped throughout the show; the song Where is the Love, which she sang while slowly walking through the audience; the flowers she tossed out to the crowd before she departed and the song she sang in Spanish while reading her handwritten notes off a simple A4 sheet of paper - and then scrunching it up and throwing that into the crowd as well.

The Moon - dedicated to Bruce, who couldn't be there last night.
